- ----MicroExcel's Shareware Database----
-
- Select HARD COPY from the menu to printout this file. This will be
- necessary if you intend to read it while learning your way around this
- shareware database's host program called Perfect Recall.
-
- Before installing shareware you should get an uninstall utility program.
- Press "L" to find the file describing uninstall utilities.
-
- Product descriptions accompanying shareware are too short. It's almost
- impossible to tell one program from another not to mention frustrating
- to learn a program only to find out things the author could have told
- you in the first place. This shareware database was born of the need to
- know more.
-
- This database contains over 1600 products listed by various shareware
- support organizations and vendors. Product descriptions were
- initialized with whatever text the support organization provided. Each
- author had an opportunity to submit improved descriptions of any length
- along with reviews. The database is designed to assist you in finding
- products with detailed information, published reviews and awards.
- Finding the winners is a snap.
-
- The purpose of this database, besides servicing shareware, is to
- introduce Perfect Recall. PR is an information tracking and handling
- product capable of placing everything on the computer, floppy disks,
- CD-ROM's and the Internet at your fingertips.
-
- The following documentation is intended for CD-ROM operation. It is
- very short and only covers elementary use. Order the printed
- documenation for more detailed information. Order documentation by
- running the BUYER.EXE progarm or calling 800 636-6961. You need not
- register Perfect Recall to order documentation.
-
-
- -----GETTING STARTED-----
-
- The start-up screen displays three options: Shareware database, Internet
- Resources and DEMO. Press RETRUN (ENTER key) to select number 1.
-
- When the shareware database starts it will again copy a file to your
- temporary path. This file may be erased later and will be recreated
- each time the CD is used. This file will not be required once the
- program is installed on a hard disk.
-
- The second screen offers several choices. These are called categories.
-
- 1) All Products
- 2) Products games
- 3) New products
- 4) CD-ROM
- 5) Resources
- 6) Marketing tools
- 7) Address
- 8) General Interest
-
- The relationship between categories and databases is a little off the
- wall so we'll just dive in and see what happens. The highlight should
- be on 1 so press RETURN to continue. The second screen further
- subdivides the product information.
-
- Let's suppose we wanted to hunt down file managers capable of viewing
- ZIP files. Drop down through the category tree structure as follows:
-
- Highlight (1) UTILITIES and press RETURN.
- Highlight (2) FILE and press RETURN.
- Highlight (1) MANAGE FILES and press RETURN.
- Upon selecting MANAGE FILES a new screen appears listing products.
- Information about each product is stored in what is called a
- database record. Here each record receives one line across the
- screen to display as much of itself as possible.
-
- Before we go any further let's see what the real information looks like.
- Press the down arrow key to highlight the line with FileBUDDY. Press
- RETURN to load the text file associated with it. This text file
- contains a detailed description and other information. While we're here
- let's try a neat trick. Press N to view the text file associated with
- the another product. Using NEXT and PREVIOUS functions we can page
- through descriptions without going back to the Record List screen.
-
- Press ESC and return to the Record List screen.
-
- Some categories have just a few entries while others have dozens. The
- idea behind this program is to narrow the list of candidates until just
- a handful remain. Let's narrow the list such that only ZIP file
- managers remain. Press S to select SEARCH. Highlight (3) KEYWORDS and
- press RETURN. Type ZIP and press RETURN. Press G to select GO SEARCH.
-
- Well, now there's just two; FileBUDDY and WizManager. Press the down
- arrow key to highlight 2 for Wizmanager. Press RETURN to view its
- description. After reading this, notice there is an OTHER FILES option
- on the menu. Press O. This displays a list of files associated with
- this product. Highlight 2 and press RETURN to get the product review.
- Press ESC to exit.
-
- Suppose we wanted to order WizManager. Where is the information ?
- Perfect Recall links databases together using the Jump-to-Related
- function. Press J. Two destinations are listed; AUTHOR and CD-ROM.
- Software can be ordered from either of these. Let's access the CD-ROM
- database. Press the right arrow key to highlight CD-ROM and press
- RETURN.
-
- Perfect Recall has jumped to the CD-ROM database and found several CD's.
- Now suppose you wanted to evaluate the contents of these CD-ROM's.
- Press J to display the Jumps available for CD-ROM's. Select SOFTWARE.
- This Jump returns to the software database except now it displays all
- programs carried by just one CD-ROM. Studying the list will tell you if
- the selected CD contains other programs of interest. Pressing the ESC
- key once returns to the CD-ROM database. Pressing it again returns to
- the shareware database from which you started.
-
- This wraps up our discussion on basic features.
-
- While the category tree structure helps divide products into meaningful
- groups it can also get in your way. Furthermore it runs rather slow on
- a CD-ROM. There will be times when you want a search to extend across
- more that one category. Suppose we now wanted to search the entire
- database for all products that handle ZIP files.
-
- At the moment you should still be in the Record List screen with just
- two products showing. To suspend the category tree structure just
- select LOOK ELSEWHERE then Global. Now press the END key to see how
- long this list really is. This will take a while since more than two
- thousand entries must be read.
-
- The top of the screen says, "ORIGINAL RECORDS". A special mode has been
- activated so that each product only appears once even though it may
- exist in several different categories.
-
- Now we want to see only those products for which the author has provided
- detailed information. Access the search screen. Press S. Highlight 8,
- press RETURN, type "*" or "NOT BLANK", press RETURN. Select GO SEARCH.
-
- Well, we picked up WinZip in addition to WizManager and FileBUDDY. As
- chance would have it these are all outstanding products although they
- serve very different needs. When searching for a product it's always
- best to start with those that have extended descriptions. There is a
- clear relationship between description quality and how success the
- product is.
-
- While a Global search is in effect the Record List screen's menu does
- not have a Jump-to-Related option. So how does one find CD-ROMs or the
- authors address ? There are two ways.
-
- Press (I) to access the Individual record screen. Most of the time
- there is little reason to come here but now we need it. This screen
- always has a Jump-to-Related option. The advantage of coming here is
- that you can check the CD-ROM heading #10 (field) to make sure it has an
- entry before executing a jump to the CD-ROM database. If there is no
- entry, a message will appear saying heading #10 is empty. Another
- advantage here is seeing the flags for extended description, reviews and
- awards all at once. Tip: use the PgUp and PgDn keys to skip directly
- from one Individual record to another without going back to the Record
- List screen.
-
- The second way to execute a Jump-to-Related while the search is Global
- is to switch the search back to Local. Do this by highlighting the
- product of interest on the Record List screen and select LOOK ELSEWHERE
- / LOCAL. Restoring a Local search will restore the Jump-to-Related
- option. Tip: switching back and forth between Global and Local searches
- is an easy way to navigate the whole database without wandering about in
- the very large category tree.
-
- There are two operations on the main menu (category tree structure) that
- are very helpful: JUMP and FIND.
-
- JUMP enables a global search of the entire database without first
- entering a category and then selecting Look Elsewhere. The Branch
- search is also found under JUMP. This is similar to Global except it
- restricts itself to those categories beneth the current one. This might
- be used to view all entires under Utilities.
-
- FIND will search category names for text and display a list of
- candidates. This is an essential service. Just try to find
- the category of PIM's (Personal Information Managers) without it.
-
-
- You actually know quite a bit so it's time to browse on your own.
- The process works something like this;
-
- 1) Drop down into a promising category. (use FIND if necessary)
- 2) Do a search if the list is too long.
- 3) View text files.
- 4) If necessary change over to a Global search
- to see if more can be found elsewhere.
- 5) Use Jump-to-Related to find related
- information in other databases.
-
-
- Other tips:
-
- You might be interested in viewing only Windows applications. To do
- this, drop into any category of interest. Select Search. Set Op.
- system on the search screen to WIN. Press G to execute the search. Now
- only Windows programs will be displayed. This search setting will stay
- in effect as long as you stay in the product database. ALT-C on the
- Record List screen will clear it.
-
-
- -----OTHER DATABASES----
-
- The start-up screen display several other databases.
-
- 1) All Products
- 2) Products games
- 3) New products
- 4) CD-ROM
- 5) Resources
- 6) Marketing tools
- 7) Address
- 8) General Interest
-
- Databases ADDRESS and CD-ROM were accessed earlier using the
- Jump-to-Related feature from the product database. The CD-ROM database
- lists many shareware packed CD-ROMs. This is the best way to acquire
- shareware if you have a CD-ROM drive. $20.00 will purchase thousands of
- programs.
-
- The resources database is a catch all for other services such as on-line
- services and shareware organizations.
-
-
- The marketing tools database is just for software developers.
-
- ----Moving shareware database to your hard disk----
-
- The individual record of WizManager looked something like this.
-
- (1) PROGRAM NAME............WizManager Pro 2.0
- (2) PRICE...................$39.95
- (3) KEY WORDS...............File manager, Button Bar,...
- (4) OP. SYSTEM..............WIN
- (5) AUTHOR..................Mijenix
- (6) MARK
- (7) Reviews.................*
- (8) Extended description....*
- (9) Awards..................*
- (11) CDROM...................34
-
- The MARK entry is for you to flag products of interest with a "*" or
- whatever. Flagged products can then be easily relocated using the
- search tools. This can not be done when running on a CD-ROM. The
- database must be moved to the hard disk first. Simply run INSTALL.EXE
- to do this. The program will require 2.2 to 2.3 megabytes of disk
- space.
-
- After Perfect Recall has been installed to the hard disk it can be used
- to manage your own files and information. Perfect Recall is completely
- free form. Databases can be designed to handle anything. To find out
- more about Perfect Recall select Library now and choose to view file
- MXDB.DOC.
-
- There is a demo on this CD for using PR to run an office. Select DEMO
- from the Main menu. Documentation is found under MENU.
-
- Unfortunately, Perfect Recall can not be used for personal needs without
- documentation. Order documentation by running the BUYER.EXE program or
- calling 800 636-6961. To access the BUYER program for Perfect Recall's
- start-up screen:
-
- 1) Start Perfect Recall.
- 2) From inside Perfect Recall select Menu at the start-up screen.
- 3) From this new menu select PURCHASING.
-
- The BUYER program will process your order and write a file to floppy
- disk. Mail this file to the address given. Support is available after
- documentation is purchased.
-
